Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Locomotive and Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our maintenance team at our West Memphis Transload facility. In this role, you will be responsible for the inspection, repair, and maintenance of locomotives, heavy equipment, and related machinery to ensure the safe and efficient operations of our facility. This position requires a hands-on mechanic with extensive experience working with locomotives, cranes, loaders, and other large industrial equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of locomotives, heavy equipment, and facility machinery (e.g., cranes, loaders, forklifts, etc.).
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on various equipment.
- Conduct inspections and routine maintenance tasks including lubrication, changing fluids, filters, and belts.
- Coordinate locomotive mechanical department functions with all other departments.
- Comply with the guidelines set forth by the FRA on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers.
- Perform air tests, inspect, and repair locomotives or components for structural defects and wear according to FRA and manufacturing guidelines.
- Must possess the ability to become a qualified locomotive inspector according to the FRA regulations.
- Familiar with state and federal regulations as it relates to the railroad industry.
- Must be able to perform emergency repairs and re-railing of railroad rolling stock.
- Repair or replace worn or damaged parts, such as engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.
- Perform emergency repairs to minimize equipment downtime and ensure safe operations.
- Use diagnostic tools, manuals, and technical documents to identify and correct mechanical issues.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and ensure compliance with industry regulations and company standards.
- Assist with equipment upgrades, modifications, and installations as needed.
- Adhere to all safety standards and protocols while working with hazardous materials or machinery.
- Work closely with operations staff to schedule maintenance and minimize disruptions to transload operations.
- Assist in maintaining an organized and clean work environment.
Requirements and Experience:

- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must have completed a three-year Railroad Apprenticeship or have four years railroad related experience or five years’ experience in some other mechanical field.
- Must posse’s valid driver’s license and be insurable by company insurance provider to drive and operate company vehicles and equipment, as necessary. Must have or must be able to obtain a Class B CDL driver’s license.
- Must have the ability to become a qualified Service Engineer according to Federal Railroad Administration regulations and will be required to perform electrical duties as required.
Reading & Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of this organization. Ability to write and update rules and manuals to assure continuous compliance with all federal regulations.
- The team member in this job must be able to pass Track Ground School, GCOR Written Test, Roadway Worker Protection Written Test, Fall Protection Written Test, Maintenance of Way Safety Written Test, MSHA/OSHA Training and Certification (if required on site).
- High school education or general education (GED)
- Must be 18 years or older.
