Position Summary
The Railcar Repair position is responsible for inspecting, maintaining and repairing all aspects of a railcar in accordance with the Company, FRA and/or AAR Regulations. This is accomplished by performing all or any combination of the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
- Follow written and verbal directions to complete assigned tasks on schedule.
- Read and understand instructions, technical manuals, and blueprints.
- Maintain written and/or computerized maintenance records.
- Demonstrate basic math & mechanical skills, including reading of a tape measure.
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: steel toe boots, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, hot work PPE, fall protection, respirators and a variety of protective suits.
- Learn from directions, observations, and mistakes and apply procedures using good judgment
- Using multiple types of metal fabrication and hand tools in all positions without damage to adjoining parts.
- Observes radio and hand signals in accordance with railroad rules and regulations.
- Required to perform daily AAR load securement audits daily.
- Required to respond to customers car issues immediately.
- Perform High/Wide measurements of loads daily and submit required paperwork daily to Class 1 partners.
- Will be required to prep flat cars for customers by removing dirt, snow, ice from the deck. Ensure all tie down chains are in working order.
- Will clean out trash and expired products inside refrigerated cars.
- Will also work with maintenance of way when there are no cars to work.
- Performs other duties as requested or required.
Requirements and Experience:
- High school education or general education development (GED).
- Ability to pass training and required testing.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have the ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.
- Must have the ability to write legibly.
- Must be able to perform duties that require heavy lifting.
- Must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to have a flexible work schedule.
- Must have the ability to recognize problems.
Work Environment:
- The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
- The team member is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and elements, noise, and fumes from gas, oil, and grease.
- Frequently exposed to heights that require fall protection equipment and required to use personal protective equipment as environmental conditions dictate.

- Hammers, ratchets, chisel, pry bar, wrenches, and brushes.
- PPE; hard hat, vest, safety glasses, FR clothing, gloves, steel toed boots.
